Introduction

I am a forestry consultant in western Massachusetts. I graduated from U. Mass., Amherst, Massachusetts in the spring of 1973 with a major in forest management and a minor in everything else.

After several years of seeking integrity in government and industry forestry work I discovered that finding it is easiest in the world of consulting as long as substantial wealth is not on my list of priorities.

As in most professions- forestry has a party line and I am proud to say I do not support it. But I'll get to that in future posts.

Several years ago one of my clients' forest was designated a Guild Model Forest. It is the only one in Massachusetts.

In 2009 I was appointed to the Technical Steering Committee for the Department of Conservation and Recreation's Forest Futures Visioning Process- a laborious endeavor of countless meetings and email discussions which was established after the public reacted negatively to poor forestry practices on state land.

My non party line vision of forestry is best summarized in a powerpoint presentation. I call it my one third rule of thumb.

I have begun a series of videos on forestry subjects which I will develop further as time permits.

Rather than bore you with information about forestry laws, estate management and similar subjects- you can find all of that at the state's excellent extension forestry website.

For those of you interested in old growth forests and specimen trees, a terrific bulletin board system you must check out is run by ENTS - The Eastern Native Tree Society.

I have recently posted an article on another blog: http://www.farmfieldforest.org/2011/06/joe-zorzin-sounds-off-on-forest.html
